Doctor Who @ 40 Weekend - Part Three

We've reached part three of this month's anniversary extravaganza, taking a look back at UK Gold's celebration of wonderful Who's big 40th birthday. Now, I know sometimes third parts can be full of tedious padding (Time-Flight, God help us that was grim), but not this one! Not only has WhoGold got the lowdown on the Peter Davison and Colin Baker years, but there's a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the making of those four classic Radio Times covers from 2003, and a look at why the series was eventually cancelled in 1989...

Peter Davison (1982-84)

Pleasant, open faced Peter took over one of the most iconic roles in television from the mighty Tom Baker, and didn't he do well? Daniel Billing, David J Howe, Andrew Beech, Clayton Hickman, Dale Who, Nicola Bryant and Peter himself talk about the early 1980s and his favourite story, The Caves Of Androzani (shown Saturday 22nd November, 9.35-11.35am).

Radio Times (2003)

In November 2003, television listings magazine Radio Times printed four unique covers to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Doctor Who, featuring Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Definitely not just to make cash from people with OCD, I'm sure... With contributions from Dick Fiddy, Andy Earl, Paul Smith, Matthew Tombs.

Colin Baker (1984-86)

Crap costume, crap scripts, crap effects... but a great Doctor. Colin talks about his time as the Sixth Doctor, with contributions from companion Nicola Bryant, Antony Wainer, Dale Who, Steve Berry, Hilton Fitzsimmons, Michael Kilgarriff and Clayton Hickman. Attack of the Cybermen was voted as Colin's best story (in the absence of Revelation of the Daleks, no doubt) and was screened on Sunday 23rd November 2003 from 11.20am-1.20pm.

The Cancellation Crisis

In the late 1980s, Doctor Who's days were numbered. But what went wrong? Opinions come from Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred, Terrance Dicks, Barry Letts, Verity Lambert, Michael Jayston, Clayton Hickman, Mark Campbell, Gary Russell, Andrew Beech, Dick Fiddy, Ian Wheeler, Karen Davies, Antony Wainer, Steve Berry and Hilton Fitzsimmons. WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS A CLIP OF DOCTOR IN DISTRESS.

Come back next week - that's Sunday 27th November 2011 - for the fourth and final foray into UK Gold's 'Doctor Who @ 40 Weekend'. Until then, be smart, be safe!
