From Genesis To Revelation

Time for a double dose of the Doctor, Davros and those dastardly Daleks now on WhoGold... alliteration is awesome...

Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks
UK Gold - Sunday 17th September 1995
9.20am-midday

Perennially regarded as one of the greatest Doctor Who stories of all time, Genesis of the Daleks has had more than its fair share of repeats over the years, on both terrestrial and satellite television. UK Gold first aired the story episode-by-episode in mid-December 1993, with an omnibus edition following a few weeks later on Sunday 9th January 1994. With the series being repeated in cycles, Genesis reappeared the following year, again in both complete and edited formats. Here's clips from the omnibus edition screened on 17th September 1995, with voiceover artist Glen Allen providing the continuity.

Moving forward into the 21st century now, where Davros is still alive and kicking... well, not exactly kicking, he can't use his legs, but you get the idea...

Doctor Who: Revelation of the Daleks
UK Gold - Monday 26th May 2003
4.20-6.10pm

By May 2003 the 40th anniversary celebrations of the series were in full swing, as UK Gold dedicated a huge chunk of each Bank Holiday Monday to stories featuring Skaro's finest. The estate of Terry Nation had placed an embargo on television broadcasts of all his stories (and others featuring the Daleks) whilst financial negotiations took place with the BBC. As a result, UK Gold decided to screen all their Dalek stories before their transmission rights expired.

The first 'Dalek Day' on Monday 5th May 2003 ran over twelve and a half hours and included omnibus editions of The Daleks (1963), The Dalek Invasion of Earth (1964), Day of the Daleks (1971), Planet of the Daleks (1973) and Death to the Daleks (1974); sadly the 1965 adventure The Chase was omitted (either Gold did not have the rights, or they simply couldn't fit it into the schedule).

The second 'Dalek Day' on Monday 26th May 2003 covered the five stories featuring their creator Davros, namely Genesis of the Daleks (1975), Destiny of the Daleks (1979), Resurrection of the Daleks (1984), Revelation of the Daleks (1985) and Remembrance of the Daleks (1988).

Gold had created special 'break bumpers' and idents for the marathons using striking images from classic Dalek stories, some of which you can see in the video above. By this time, the channel had also decided to annoy the hell out of viewers by flashing up information of the next programme over the closing moments of each programme - which made little sense on a day when ten hours of the schedule was devoted to Doctor Who! The channel would devote a whole weekend to the series a few months later, but we'll come back to that in November...

Many thanks to Rich for providing the Genesis clips. Hope you've enjoyed this bumper edition of WhoGold - please come back for more classic clips on Sunday August 7th 2011. Bye for now!

I remember being up early to catch DIOE on the first Bank Holiday, and, um, rather wishing I'd stayed in bed. Or at least gone back to it after I'd set the tape going.

Destiny was the other story they showed here that I hadn't seen, but either that was on at a more reasonable hour or I must have enjoyed it more, because I don't remember struggling to get through it.

Didn't episodes 1 and 6 of The Chase turn up on UKDrama at some point?

    And, er...'Relevation'? :)

  2. I think 'Revelation' was the only one I taped, I didn't bother with the others. I do have a memory of single episodes of The Chase appearing on UKTVDrama but I can't recall tuning in for them, there seemed little point. It got ridiculous and they ended up showing random Tom Baker episodes during the middle of the night... they should've just put the testcard up! ;-)
